West trip 2019 #24 Custer South Dakota

Image
Sept. 17-19th     We will only travel about 50 miles today as we head for Custer, SD.  We decided to camp at Comanche Park a Black hills national forest campground.  However, there are no hookups or water available so we will need to dump tanks and fill up with water before heading to the campground.  We got there around 11am and the campground was closed except for a couple sites outside the gate.    I am glad we got there early as in the afternoon several campers came in to find the sites occupied.  We offered to scrunch over to make room on our site but no takers.  Guess I better take a shower..haha.  After setting up camp we headed to the Needles highway.    On our way to Needles highway we stopped to see the Crazy Horse memorial from a distance.  They are making progress but have a long way to go. The needles highway was awesome and very scenic.  We stopped along the way for some very short hik...

West Trip 2019 #23 Travel to South Dakota

Sept. 12-15th     We continue our travels north towards South Dakota byway of Colorado and Wyoming.  Today's travels will be about 236 miles to Grand Junction Colorado.  On the way we stopped at Canyonlands National Park to eat some lunch.     We reached Grand Junction Co. in late afternoon and headed for a OHV BLM area at end of 25 rd to spend the night. It was a very dusty area and many of the sites with fire rings had tons of broken glass so needed to be careful for Kira's sake and tires.  There were a few off roaders , but the view was awesome and very peaceful once it was dark.    The next day we packed up and and headed for the high mountain passes on our way to the Black hills.  I-70 is a beautiful drive for most of this day but Fred (our truck) was struggling over Vail pass and Johnson tunnel. We had the emergency flashers on more than not with speeds on I-70 down to 20 mph (that's all Fred could muster)...

West Trip 2019 #22 Mesa Verde NP

Sept. 11-13th   Mesa Verde National PArk     Todays travels will be 236 miles.  We will travel through Valley of the gods and will stop for a tour.      We planned to stay at a boondocking site just outside of Mesa Verde NP.  However, upon arriving we decided the road in was too rough for our rig..(Another need for 4WD).  So we headed for the park and was able to find space at Morfield Campground.  This place was pricey for no hookups even with a park pass.     This was an interesting stop with several sites showing how ancestral Puebloan people lived.    Tomorrow we will head for Devil's Tower in Wyoming with some overnights in Grand Junction, CO at a OHV BLM area and Wheatland Wyoming Lewis park for free camping. See Ya Then, Tom, Pat and Kira
