West Trip #3 Rocky Mountain National Park

August 5th-8th, 2019  Estes Park Colorado


  We traveled from Colorado Springs to Estes Park today setting up at the Estes Park KOA.   This is a cute town with beautiful views all around the town.  We saw our 1st elk of the trip here in town.  The campground is clean with nice folks but wow the sites are very tight.  So tight we couldn't fully extend our awning .  However we didn't spend much time at the campground.

August 6th, 2019 Emerald lake hike

    Need to start early here.  We headed to Bear lake trailhead by 8am and lot was full.  We ended up taking a shuttle from another parking area down the mountain but only waited about 30 min.  We hiked to Emerald lake from the Bear lake trailhead and what a beautiful area although busy.  We passed Bear lake, Nymph lake and Dream lake on the way.

After the hike we headed back down the mountain and explored some of the park looking for wildlife but only found one Elk near dusk.

August 7th, 2019 Trail Ridge road

    Today we decided to see the sights along the Trail Ridge rd.  This road runs 48 miles between Estes Park and Grand Lake with eleven miles above the 11,500 ft tree line upto 12,300 ft with spectacular views.  Awesome  :) Lots of Elk and seen some Moose towards Grand lake side.

Well it's been great but tomorrow we leave and head for Cody, Wyoming :)

 Hi All,    During our 2020 west trip we sold our home in Wilmington N.C. and have been renting a townhouse in Charlottesville Va. where we were re-acquainted with big snows.  We are told they normally do not have much snow so I guess this was for us :)  View out back Lake 1/4 mile away   We looked for something around Topsail island for 6 months but prices were crazy.       The townhouse was an experiment to see if we would be happy in an apartment.  We found out a couple things about ourselves.  We do not want steps and we need a little more space from neighbors.  During this time our son in law accepted a job with a church in Birmingham Alabama.   Sooooo we started looking for a small house in Birmingham.  The real estate market is crazy in Birmingham and houses were being snatched up before we could get a virtual tour.  We made a quick trip to take a look at homes that were available and planned to ...

2020 West Trip # 4 Theodore Roosevelt National Park

 Sept 4th-7th    We had a leisure morning since we would only travel 100 miles today.  Seems most campgrounds were full or closed.  We found Oleo Acres Rv Park located half way between the North and South units of TRNP for a great price with full hookups.  Once we arrived and setup camp we headed to the north unit. The next day it was the South unit and the town of Medora's turn for exploration.   Chateau De Mores the little cottage of  Antoine de Vallombrosa, the Marquis de Mores Roosevelt cabin      We have enjoyed our visit here but we need to make Seattle by September 16th so time to head West tomorrow. West Trip 2019 #13 Mt. Rainier National Park

Aug 24th-26th   We are headed to Mt. Rainier NP this morning.  It is suppose to take 3 hrs and 41 minutes but when you tow a camper add 40% or so.    We looked at a couple of campgrounds in the park but they are full.  We found a NF campground just outside called Buck Creek and it was free for us old folks :)  no hookups and no water available.  It's located next to Rangers airstrip were small planes can land and Helicopters take off to perform rescues on Mt. Rainer Finally some boondocking for free.  We settled in and prepared for exploring.  Decided to drive some of the park to help prepare a plan for hikes tomorrow. Next day we headed to Sunrise visitor center to do some hiking.  Our 1st hike was up to Sourdough ridge. Then we headed to Emmons vista and on to Silver forest.
