West Trip 2019 #10 Jasper National Park

Aug 18th-20th

We arrive at Wabasso campground in late afternoon and setup camp.  Good thing there is light late into the night that allows us to venture out after setting up camp.
Wabasso Campsite
Finally a campfire

This campground borders the Athabasca river.  There are no hookups but a dump and water is available.  This is the first campfire of the trip although we had to buy a permit for it. However one perk is free firewood.
There is a lot of pine borer beetle damage in this area with some mountain sides entirely brown and dead.

We took in the Sunwapta falls and Athabasca falls today.  The area is pretty busy with lots of tour bus and people.  Not exactly an alone wilderness area.  Then back to camp for some dinner.  Tomorrow we will get an early start and hike the valley of  5 lakes area.  One of the nice things about Canadian parks is Dogs are allowed on trails:)

After breakfast its time to do some hiking.  We grab our packs and some bear spray and head for Valley of five lakes trailhead. A 2.8 mile loop with 66 meters of elevation gain.  Nice walk with pretty views.

Afterwards we grab some lunch and head for Maligne Canyon for some additional hiking and sight seeing.

This is as far North as we will go on this trip.  Although I was tempted to head up to Alaska.  If it was Early July we may have gone.
Back to camp and get ready for the next phase of our journey.  We head southwest towards Washington, USA and North Cascades National park.

See Ya Then,
Tom
