West Trip 2019 #21 Lake Powell

Sept. 7th-11th

Today we traveled 140 miles to Wahweap campground on Lake Powell.  It is Hot!!  But, what a beautiful area.  With Kira we will need air conditioning so decided on a full hookup site.

After setting up camp and getting some air going for Kira we headed out to explore the area and stopped by the Big Water visitor center for some information.  They had a cool display of dinosaur head cast that were found in the area.

Then we headed towards Catstair canyon East trail head.

We must be crazy it is 111 degrees when we head out on the trail and bone dry.  This is a short hike of .5 mile to the canyon and then we will have shade.  It was a nice warm up hike.... Haha.

Back to camp for some dinner and a walk down to the lake for sunset.

Up early this morning to head to Page, AZ and taken in Horseshoe bend overlook.  I was expecting a short walk to an overlook but this was more like a .75 mile trail with a couple hundred feet of elevation change.  Glad we went early before the day heated up.

Next we head for the Hanging gardens trail.  This was a 1 mile loop through sand and over slick rock but pretty easy.

The day is heating up so we headed back to camp with stops at the glen canyon dam and Carl Hayden visitor center.  We talked to a ranger about camping at the Lone rock beach as we needed another night on our stay here.  Was planning to kayak the area around Lone rock.  We decided to get Kira and check it out.
When we got there we decided to walk the area and found that the sand was to soft for our rig without 4 wheel drive.  Oh well...  My next truck will have 4 wheel drive.  Back to camp.

Today is finally time to explore Antelope canyon.  We made this reservation back in January and it has driven most of our trip schedule to be here today.  Hope it is worth it.

 It Was :)

We have been carrying our kayaks since August 1st and today we will pull them off the top of the truck and visit the water side of Antelope canyon.  The wind is still up blowing about 15 to 20 mph so the lake has some white caps in spots.  We put in at Antelope point launch ramp and made for the canyon.  We got a little wet on this trip with the wind in our face most of the time until we turned into Antelope canyon.  this was awesome.  The whole canyon is suppose to be no wake and most power boaters abide by the rules.  Did have to raise a little kane with one guy who should not be driving a boat.

One other task we needed to complete was heading to Walmart in Page AZ to pickup tires we ordered in August while in Tetons NP.  We cut a side wall and have been running on our spare since.  It will be nice to have a new pair on the truck.
We originally planned to continue south and east into New Mexico and Texas.   I thought the weather would be cooler in mid September when I planned this trip many months ago.  However, sometimes plans have to change whether on a sailboat or in a camper.   We decided to instead head for the Black hills of South Dakota with a couple of stops on the way.   Our next destination will be Mesa Verde National park in Colorado.

See Ya There,
Tom,Pat and Kira
