Glacier National Park #6
August 12th - 15th
After a great time at Yellowstone we headed to Glacier National park today. We picked a campground outside the park and made reservations at Murray Bay campground.
We learned a lesson after this one. We thought 31 miles wasn't too far but it really depends on the road. It ended up taking a hour to get to the main road from this campground with only a well hand pump for water. But, it was beautiful back there. We came in just at dark so supper and sleep.
The next day we headed to Glacier National park. We found that going 40 or 50 mph ,when not towing, was better over this washboard road rather than 10 or 20 mph. Glacier NP is kinda of like Zion, you park and use a shuttle for most things and lots of people this time of year. The problem with shuttles is they don't stop so picture taking is through a dirty windows.
I would take the red bus next time. We had to change shuttles at Logan pass
We headed across the Going to the Sun road and got off at Saint Mary's Lake trailhead and hiked to the falls . When we changed shuttles at Logan pass and headed back down we seen our 1st Mountain goat. Picture didn't turn out sorry.
What gorgeous water color. The color is caused by the stones rubbing together from glaciers. They call it rock flour :) That one trip and hike took all day. We headed back to camp via the "Road from Hell" as Pat called it, and had dinner. The next day we drove into the park early and took a chance on finding parking. We wanted to do another hike to Avalanche lake. WE FOUND PARKING!!!
Hiked to the lake up a beautiful trail along a creek through cedars and hemlock forest to a fantastic lake. There were a couple black bears across the lake that had 2 fishermen trapped. They threw fruit snacks into the bush to get away 😨😱 After eating lunch on a log on the beach we started getting some rain so had to head back down the trail.
Tomorrow we are headed into Canada
See ya then,
Tom
