West Trip 2019 #16 Salt Lake City

Sept 4th-6th

We had planned to stay at Salt Lake State Park, however we had no reservations and they had no space.  We did get to see helicopters fighting a brush fire in the hills next to the park.

After making some calls we ended up at Salt Lake city KOA in downtown.  It was clean and space was decent for a private campground.  It is warm and we will need air conditioning for Kira our dog while we explore the area.
After getting setup it was time for some dinner.  We decided on a nearby Mexican restaurant called Red Iguana.  Food was awesome and plenty of it.

Today we are heading to the Temple square.  We got lucky and scored on street parking in front of the square area.  This is the headquarters for Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints.

We toured the small church and the visitor centers (2) and gardens.  It was an interesting history lesson with great displays and friendly people answering questions and explaining the history.

While we were there we sat in on an organ concert in there main meeting hall.  It seems that the main temple building is not used every week.  After the concert we headed for the family research center.  They have computers and folks to help research your family tree.  I hit the jackpot!  We were able to find many ancestors going back 14 generation to the 1400s.  They printed out a fan chart of my family tree for 9 generations for free.  This was pretty cool.

After we tour the temple and grounds we went to a late lunch nearby.  We started seeing all kinds of people dressed in different costumes walking the streets and eating lunch.  Come to find out there was a Comic-Con conference in town. I never seen so many Luke Skywalkers :) The State fair was also going on but we bypassed.

Well after a late lunch we head back to camp and get Kira.  We needed to drive to Costco in Sandy, Utah to get Kira a refill on her meds.  On the way back we stopped for dinner at another Mexican restaurant and it was excellent as well.

Tomorrow we will be heading towards Lake Powell stopping in Panguitch, Utah on the way.

See ya there,
Tom, Pat and Kira
